NEW YORK, March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — As of Q1 2018, smart speaker adoption in the US has reached 20% penetration according to a recent Quantum Stat survey. Findings suggest the ownership of smart speakers is accelerating beyond a single device. When owners of smart speakers were asked of the number of smart speakers found in their household, 1 in 5 said they own at least two devices.
While Amazon’s dominance in the smart speaker ecosystem continues to grow, the use of the virtual assistant (e.g. Alexa, Google Assistant) is more widely used among Apple iPhone users rather than the smart speaker according to Quantum Stat’s recent report “The Evolution of the Smart Speaker”. In the survey, 30% of respondents stated the most widely used virtual assistant in the past 30 days was Siri via the smartphone as opposed to only 12% using Alexa via the smart speaker.
“While virtual assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant usage is more commonly associated with smart speaker devices, what consumers choose to interact with the most is the virtual assistant via smartphone. While these virtual assistants are changing how consumers interact with their digital devices, improvements in query accuracy for the smart speaker is paramount for wider adoption in the US household. Ultimately, the skills and apps on the smart speaker are only as good as the AI that powers them. At the moment, the smart speaker is used more as an entertainment system in the living room rather than a smart computer like the smartphone,” said Ricky Costa, CEO of Quantum Stat.
